Whether it’s a shearing-shed in Marlborough, lawn bowlers
overlooking Rangitoto or the Kaikoura bull sale, the artist
Michael Williams gives
these familiar kiwi subjects an unexpected grandeur. He elevates
the mundane with generously scaled paintings, luscious paintwork
and clean colour. Such acute observation and competence is
a result of sound training and much practice.
Michael Williams’
art studies in London at Goldsmiths College School
of Art were interrupted by national service after which he
began a long career in the cosmetics industry which included
designing packaging and exhibitions for Helena Rubinstein.
All the while he maintained studios and painted but since
1970, as his career and family dominated, Michael’s
painting has seldom been seen publicly. He lived in
Marlborough from 1993 before moving to Katikati,
Bay of Plenty in 2007.
Michael’s work is in private collections in the UK,
USA and New Zealand.
